Diet Drinks and Children—What is the Right Amount?
Children at least through the age of 10 require adequate nutrients to ensure proper growth and development. Height/weight growth charts allow doctors to assess whether the child is growing adequately. When children are exposed to restrictive diets, they may not be consuming enough vitamins and minerals that are essential to adequate growth.
Essential nutrients like protein and water are necessary and an integral part of the growth process. Currently, there is no concern about artificial sweetener use by children. However, if the child’s main fluid intake is a diet soda, he may be missing out on all of the vitamins and minerals that can be found in 100% juice.
