I want to get in to a regular cardio routine, but I hate running. Is power walking as good? What other cardio exercises can I do?

My advice to someone that wants to get more cardio is to find an activity that you love to do. If you enjoy doing something, you are more likely to stick with that activity. Anything that elevates your heart rate for an extended period of time (10-30 minutes) can be considered cardio. Having said that, power walking is a great activity. It provides less impact to the joints than running does, and almost anyone can do it. If walking isn’t that interesting to you, try dancing, swimming, biking, rollerblading, cross country skiing or singles tennis.

The important thing to remember is that you have checked with your doctor first and you find an activity that keeps you coming back for more. If you can’t find 30 minute blocks of time in your day to exercise, then try and fit in 10 minutes a couple of times a day. A little exercise is always better than nothing at all. So don’t wait around until you “have the time to do it”. Instead “make the time to do it.”
