What are some good foods to eat to lose weight?

Taking in fewer calories than you are burning is the way to weight loss. Finding foods that are not only filling but are tasty and nutritious will help you shed any unwanted pounds. To healthfully lose weight, I first recommend making sure you are taking in enough fruits and vegetables. They are filled with vitamins and minerals that can help support your metabolism and they also have a lot of water and fiber which can make you to feel full (which can prevent you from overeating). Vegetables especially are very low in calories so be sure to consume a good variety of healthy vegetables. Serve up steamed Brussels sprouts along with your dinner and begin that course with a spinach salad! Add zucchini and squash slices to your spaghetti sauce and a vegetable stir fry filled with carrots, colored peppers, tomatoes, and onions can make a great supper. Fruit is a bit higher in calories but is still a healthy choice to consume throughout the day. You could top your oatmeal with blueberries, round out your lunch with a fruit salad made with kiwi, mango, strawberries and blackberries; and add strawberries and orange slices to your spinach salad in the evening. Smoothies may also be a good thing to consume if you are trying to lose weight. Just be sure to add healthy ingredients so you don’t go overboard on calories. I like a green smoothie made with Greek yogurt, kale, bananas, strawberries, and I round it off with ice and Healthy Balance Juice.

In addition to fruits and vegetables, make sure you are consuming plenty of protein and fiber. Choose whole wheat bread and pasta, brown rice, or select another grain to serve as an entrée dish (quinoa, barley, sorghum). These will help prevent spikes in your blood sugar and keep you fuller longer. Select healthy protein sources also. Limit red meat and processed meats and choose more lean chicken and fish. Or start to move more towards a vegetarian diet! You could substitute cubed tofu for chicken in stir fry or make your chili vegetarian by adding soy crumbles along with fiber filled beans. Make quinoa the center of the meal and top with grilled asparagus, red peppers and a variety of fresh herbs.

If weight loss is your goal, make sure you are checking labels on the products you are consuming and watch the portion sizes. I recommend bypassing the “snack” and “candy” aisle in the grocery store, as many of those foods are filled with calories, extra fat and sugar. If you plan ahead you can have the right foods on hand to consume tasty dishes that will leave you satisfied and help you lose weight!
